WHY I CONTINUE CREATING CUSTOM & ONE-OF-A-KIND LEATHER PIECES: Leather Goods Crafted Entirely by Hand, One Piece at a Time

One question I hear often is, "Why don't you make established designs with machinery instead? It would be more profitable and make life a lot easier."
It's a fair question.
In reality, the more efficient path would be to focus on established designs. In the time it takes me to design and handcraft one one-of-one eyeglasses case, I could produce dozens of cases from an established design using die-cut parts and a sewing machine. A fully custom piece requires considerably more thought, conversation, and craftsmanship.
From a business perspective, producing established designs would be a more efficient way to build a profitable and scalable business, and I completely understand why many leatherworkers choose that path. If maximizing profitability had been my priority from the beginning, custom work and one-of-one pieces would never have become part of TELLER. That, however, has never been the reason I create.
Creating something thoughtfully for one person gives me far greater fulfillment than producing dozens of established designs.
The most rewarding part of this work isn't simply making a custom leather piece. It is getting to understand the person behind it—their style, their preferences, and the things they value—and bringing to life something they may not have been able to find elsewhere.
Sometimes a customer already has a clear vision. Other times, they only have a feeling or an idea that is difficult to express in words. Helping discover that vision, solving a unique design challenge, and transforming ideas into something tangible is one of the most rewarding and meaningful parts of what I do.
I feel the same when creating my one-of-one pieces. The process begins with the character of the leather itself—choosing materials, colors, and details with intention to transform it into something unique. Every choice reflects the experiences, observations, and perspective I have developed over time.
The difference lies in how each design comes to life.
With a custom piece, the owner helps discover the design.
With a one-of-one piece, the design discovers its owner.
